Biography
Benjamin and Sarah Carter were members of the Shrewsbury Monthly Meeting in Monmouth County, New Jersey, then called East Jersey. Shrewsbury was the first Quaker Meeting established in the Jerseys. The early records from Shrewsbury tell us only that Benjamin Carter was active in the meeting from at least 1732. The family left the Shrewsbury meeting in 1735 when their membership was transferred to the Burlington Monthly Meeting in Burlington County, New Jersey.
Benjamin Carter was active in the Burlington Monthly Meeting. He was frequently appointed to conduct visits and oversights, and he attended Quarterly Meetings.
Ben and Sarah lived in the Springfield township of Burlington County. His home was between Mount Holly and Arney’s Mount. During the winter months, Ben would oversee meetings at Arney’s Mount.
